The Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers have remained near the top of the Eastern Conference over the past few years but the success of the organizations has been severely different.

The recent disputes between Philadelphia general manager Daryl Morey and guard James Harden raise an important question. Is Philadelphia failing as an organization?

NBA legend Reggie Miller recently spoke on the Harden saga on NBA TV.

"Joel Embiid was the MVP last year, correct," Miller said "... Have you ever heard of someone not wanting to play with an MVP? How could someone want out from playing against the reigning MVP?"

Miller could be suggesting that Harden is not upset with the team but rather the front office.

Over the last 10 years, the Heat have been a near perfect example of a successful franchise. Few teams have done a more efficient job of drafting and scouting than Miami. They have selected stars Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro near the end of the lottery while also finding a multitude of undrafted gems, including Duncan Robinson, Kendrick Nunn, and Gabe Vincent.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, has owned a top-three pick four times dating to 2014, but only Joel Embiid remains on their roster. They have selected notable letdowns: Jahlil Okafor, Ben Simmons, and Jahlil Okafor.

Coaching is one of the most important aspects of an organization. Since 2010, the 76ers have had four coaches while Miami has only had Erik Spoelstra.

Philadelphia has been unable to get past the Eastern Conference semifinals since 2011. The Heat have reached the Finals six times, winning twice.
