Insider: Potential Jazz Draft Selection Eyeing Position Change

In this story:
One of this year's most tantalizing prospects in the draft, Ausar Thompson, may end up in a different role within the NBA than he's playing now in Overtime Elite. According to Utah Jazz insider, Tony Jones of The Athletic, Thompson may end up being the primary ball-handler and playmaker of an NBA-level offense, switching from shooting guard to point guard.
Truly think he’s gonna end up a point guard. Only reason he isn’t one already is because he’s playing with his brother https://t.co/leAKxFY5Kl

Since playing for Overtime Elite, Thompson has played alongside his brother and 2023 draft prospect, Amen. Since Amen possesses a bit better skills as a ball-handler and driver, he's been dubbed as the point for their respective team. However, with these two likely ending up on different teams come June, we could see Ausar take another step in terms of offensive responsibility without having to play off-ball as often.
For the Jazz, this could end up being a major development. The roster could use a young point guard with high potential to develop for the future. Last year's starting point, Colin Sexton, did have a productive debut season for the Jazz, but we know his limitations at this point in his career.
He's limited as a playmaker for his teammates, and standing at 6'1 known to be primarily as a scoring guard, his defensive potential is low. Nothing says Sexton can't become an excellent sixth man for the team, but if an upgrade is available, the opportunity might be too hard to pass.
If the Jazz can have the opportunity to find their next great PG in the lottery, it may be exactly what the team needs to pair with All-Star Lauri Markkanen.
According to Tankathon, Ausar Thompson is currently projected as the 5th-overall pick in the draft, so his stock may have to drop a bit leading up to the draft in order for the Jazz to have a chance at him. Either that or the franchise can find some luck in Tuesday’s lottery.
The Jazz will continue to scout some of this year's best draft talent to select with the projected 9th-overall pick in the draft, set to take place on June 22nd.
