Report: Jazz Parting With Two Assistants, Including Alex Jensen
Alex Jensen's Utah roots run deep. We're talking about Utah's 1994 'Mr. Basketball' who hailed from Centerville and played under the late, great Rick Majerus at the University of Utah.
Those Utah roots make Saturday's news that Jensen won't be retained by Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy a bit of a bummer.
Jensen isn't the only Jazz assistant coach who won't be coming back. The Athletic's Tony Jones broke the news on Twitter.
"As Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy moves into his second season and makes adjustments to his coaching staff, he is not retaining assistant coaches Alex Jensen and Irv Roland, League Sources tell The Athletic," Jones tweeted on Saturday.
Roland landed in Utah in September of 2021 but Jensen has been with the Jazz for a decade. Jensen even won NBA D League Coach of the Year in 2013.
Jensen joined the Jazz under then-head coach Tyrone Corbin and his impact stretched across three different coaching regimes, including Hardy's. It's unclear at this moment why Hardy feels the need to part with Jensen, but it's a shakeup.
Nothing Hardy said during his end-of-season presser really hinted toward any coaching changes being made.
"I think we figured out a few things, as a program, in terms of what we want to be about," Hardy said on April 11. "And now we try to tackle the offseason. How can we improve? hHow can we help the team get better going into the next year? So we don’t want to look too far ahead and obviously, here we are with a couple of months in this offseason to try and figure out ways to get better, so, as a group—myself, Danny [Ainge], Justin [Zanik], Ryan [Smith] That’s the only thing on our minds right now is how do we get better?"
Addition by subtraction? I suppose.
