One of the most talked about parts of the Lakers offseason was about how point guard D’Angelo Russell would fare this season after his struggles in the playoffs. It dominated your Los Angeles Lakers' news cycle all summer, but after the first preseason game, it seems that narrative may have been put to bed.

While there is still work to do, and Russell still needs to be consistent, he looked very good in the team's first game action. Insider Jovan Buha of The Athletic called out Russell for his stellar play in the game and gave him props for how he handled himself.

“Russell was awesome in the first half, reminding his growing number of skeptics of his regular-season offensive value, particularly when James and Reaves are off the floor. He ran the offense brilliantly and struck the right balance between looking for his own shot and finding his teammates. He finished with 15 points and five assists.”

The Lakers are going to need Russell to be effective if they want to go anywhere this season. He helps make their offense that much better with his shooting and play-making ability. It also takes some of the load off guys like LeBron James when he runs the point, so the need for Russell is there for the Lakers.

Head coach Darvin Ham praised Russell for his performance and was happy to see him building some chemistry with the new guys on the roster.

“D-Lo did a great job of being methodical in our middle pick-and-roll,” Ham said. “Jaxson, he’s a natural-born live wire. Constantly looking to get hits and get his teammates open. And also, after the hit, really going downhill with force toward the rim. So they looked good together in the pick-and-roll.”

Per Jovan Buha of The Athletic

If Russell can continue playing like this, the team will be in great shape. They don’t need him to be the big-time scorer, but rather fit into the flow of the team, and produce that way.
