It's night and day when we're discussing this Lakers team from the start of the season to now. The Lakers were God-awful to begin the season; they started off 2-10 and showed no signs of being a contender. Even when Los Angeles was crawling back with their tram pre-trade deadline, there seemed to be a limit to what they could do.

Then the trade deadline came, and the Lakers look like a real team that could compete for an NBA title in a wide-open Western Conference. Even though LA has some ways to go to secure a playoff spot, you can feel a different energy with this team, and today they have a great opportunity to inch closer to a guaranteed playoff spot.

Today, if LA can pull off a win against the New York Knicks, they will secure their fourth consecutive win and be .500 for the first time this season. The purple and gold have not been .500 since January 2022 and have not gotten close since right now.

Lakers insider for the OC Register Kyle Goon said head coach Darvin Ham couldn't help but chuckle with the players, reminiscing their woes at the start of the season.

"The Lakers could be in that position soon if things break right in the upcoming stretch. Ham gave a pained chuckle thinking back on the Lakers’ 2-10 start and how hard they’ve had to claw to get back to an even record. He and the team have learned plenty of lessons, and he said it was great to see the Lakers “go out and get the type of pieces that we know can fit around our two top players in LeBron and A.D.”

LA has come a long way from November 2022 to now; however, the job isn't finished. The Lakers are only focused on championships, not playoff berths. It would be a huge accomplishment considering where they started, but with LeBron James and Anthony Davis on your squad, the goal is to win an NBA championship.

No more and no less, the Laker fans understand that, Lakers brass understands that, and the Lakers players and coaching staff understand that.

The journey continues tonight as the two biggest NBA teams of the biggest megacities in the United States will collide at Crypto.com Arena.
