Lakers News: LA Guard Consulted 2 Trusted Teammates About Free Agency This Summer

In this story:
The re-signing of young guard Austin Reaves this summer was seen as the best move that the Lakers made. Reaves really emerged last season as the teams third-best player, and making sure that they kept him on the roster was crucial to their success.
It wasn’t just the fans that were ecstatic about Reaves returning to the Lakers this summer, but some of his teammates as well. He said that he has grown close with a few of the guys, and used them to discuss his free-agent options.
“Reaves had talked with some of his Lakers teammates about his impending future, especially Davis and D’Angelo Russell, two teammates with whom he’s grown especially close,”
Per Mirin Fader of The Ringer
Reaves always wanted to return to the Lakers, but even he understood that other teams could get involved. LA was capped at a certain amount of what they could offer to him, and other teams could offer almost twice as much.
LA would have had the chance to match any offer given to Reaves, but it then would have put the Lakers in a bad spot financially. Ultimately, Reaves took the best offer he could from the Lakers, and now LA is set up well going forward on the books.
“‘We had a very good feeling that L.A. was going to offer the [max] right away, and I asked [Russell and Davis] if I should take that or if I should wait. And they both gave me their opinions, and I took it to heart, because I feel like both of those guys, we have real relationships on the court, off the court."

This is the type of chemistry that was built over the last part of the season. The guys on this team genuinely care about each other, and they want what is best for each other. It’s a rare thing to see from athletes nowadays, so it’s special when it does happen.
The Lakers are set up well for this season, and hopefully, it can end with them winning another NBA title.
