Lakers News: LeBron James Insider Believes Kyrie Irving Could Still Link Up With LA

The point guard could possibly head over to the Lakers once he becomes a free agent this summer.

Although your Los Angeles Lakers were unable to land All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving during his trade deadline drama, the door on that option hasn’t completely closed. The point guard, an unrestricted free agent in 2023, could still find himself in LA in the future.

Although Irving ultimately was traded by the Brooklyn Nets to the Dallas Mavericks, it was later revealed that Los Angeles was his preferred destination out of all the teams in the running for his services. The Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers also showed interest. Brian Windhorst of ESPN shared his thoughts on the situation with Kyrie and the Lakers.

“The Kyrie story with the Lakers ain't over. They can sign him this summer.”

Assuming he doesn't sign a veteran extension with Dallas before the 2022-23 season ends, Irving could very well utilize his free agency this summer to make a move and join LA. Irving has previously stated that he has no urgency to sign a contract extension with the Mavericks, so he won't be locked in. With this in mind, it leaves the 30-year-old with the opportunity to join another team once he becomes a free agent. That team could very well be the Lakers.

Irving has previously shown interest in the Lakers on multiple occasions, so fans are waiting for the day he actually puts on the purple and gold jersey. The eight-time NBA All-Star would link up with his former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate, LeBron James to try and chase another ring together as they achieved in 2016.

The Lakers did acquire a handful of talent with D’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley, Mo Bamba, and Jarred Vanderbilt, but adding Irving to the mix would shake things up and be an ultimate game-changer for LA. Of course, LA has also been said to be considering an extension with Russell. Were that to happen, it would pretty much rule out signing Irving.
