In this story:

When the Los Angeles Lakers took home the 2020 NBA championship in one of the most unique environments in sports history, there was a lot of controversy surrounding it. The time they got to get healthy, the absence of fans and the whole Covid-19 pandemic had fans questioning whether or not they should respect the title.

Even though the Lakers were among the best teams before that season came to a pause and had just beaten the Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks, these questions were plausible. Therefore, LA knew that they had plenty of talent and versatility on their hands and decided to prove to try and prove to the world that they were legit by going back to back.

And if it wasn't for some serious injuries to both LeBron James and Anthony Davis, they very well may have been able to do so. They eventually fell to the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs and even though certain fans believe that their 2021 squad was more talented, they could not get the job done. One name that was absent on that year's roster was Dwight Howard who was able to rejuvenate his career and respect with the city of Los Angeles in his second stint there.

LA reportedly didn't want to commit multiple years to Howard after he helped win their 2020 title and he recently spoke on why he didn't agree with the front office replacing him afterwards.

"We just won a championship," said Howard. "Why would they go away from it? What did they say? We want to get better at the center position so they went and got Marc Gasol and Montrezl Harrell. That was their way of saying they got younger and better at the center position. In my mind, we just won a championship... what's better than that but they're thinking what's better for them and the way they got their business set up."

Howard will always be appreciated for his contributions to the team and there are just times where a team decides it's time to move on and it doesn't always work out.
