HBO’s hit TV series Winning Time was supposed to be the next big thing. But instead, the show found itself canceled abruptly after just two seasons.

Co-creators Jim Hecht and Max Borenstein wanted things to go differently, but it’s the reality that they now find themselves in.

“It was bittersweet,” Borenstein said. “There’s something very special and surreal about pouring so much time, energy and love into a project and then it comes out into the world and lives vibrantly for a moment and then it’s just gone and part of the landscape and you hope people are moved by it and that they return to it and it grows over time.”

There had been talk that a third season may be in doubt, but also hope that things would get better. Viewership was down from season one, and the show had seen multiple members of the 1980s Lakers come out against it.

Multiple factors caused the series to be shut down, and it ended on a frustrating part. The show was supposed to go through the Los Angeles Lakers “Showtime” era and document all of their championships. But due to the cancellation, the finale ended with LA losing the 1984 NBA Finals to their arch-rival Boston Celtics.

“It wasn’t the ending we had hoped for, obviously,” Hecht told The Messenger during the first interview he and Borenstein have conducted since they got the bad news.

The hope is that the show can get picked up by another network. It remains to be seen if that will be the case, but the co-creators aren’t ruling anything out.

“I don’t think the doors ever get closed on anything,” Borenstein said. “It’s very clear that there was something special about

Winning Time

. This is a story that has so much to be mined that’s beyond just what people thought they knew. Who knows when or if we will have that opportunity to continue it, but we live in a world where Frasier is about to get a new season after 20 years so you never know.”

Hopefully, we get to see the continuation of this show down the line!
