The Most Important Task for Magic Coach Sean Sweeney in Training Camp

In this story:
Orlando Magic head coach Sean Sweeney is inheriting a roster that has been together for the past several years through the Jamahl Mosley era.
In Sweeney's lone season on the San Antonio Spurs coaching staff, the team had a 111.4 defensive rating, which ranked third in the NBA behind the Oklahoma City Thunder and Detroit Pistons.
The Magic found themselves ranking 12th in defensive rating at 114.5, so that is something Orlando will look to improve. The Spurs also had the fourth-best offensive rating at almost 119.7, whereas the Magic ranked 18th in offensive rating at 115.1.
Mosley built a team centered around defense, which is also how Sweeney plans to run things, but he needs to extract the energy out of the team that will differentiate him from his predecessor. The Magic didn't bring Sweeney in to be a Mosley 2.0, so getting his new team to buy into his system and philosophies will be his biggest challenge in training camp.
“Fundamentals are your foundation,” Sweeney said during his introductory press conference. “If you have great fundamentals, it allows you to build upon them and add layers to it. That’s what’s going to carry you when it matters most. Secondly, your habits. You need great daily habits. We’re going to concentrate on our daily habits and our daily process to make sure that we continue to improve over the course of the season.
"It’s not going to necessarily be an upward trajectory over the whole time. There are going to be ups and downs. But we want to have great habits. And the third thing is that pressure is earned. You don’t get that pressure (of playing in The Finals) unless you’ve earned it. The teams that I’ve been with that have gotten there, earned that right to be there playing when nobody else is playing.”
Sean Sweeney Can't Repeat Jamahl Mosley's Mistakes

Mosley and Sweeney have oddly similar resumes before arriving in Orlando. Mosley and Sweeney were both assistants with the Dallas Mavericks earlier in their careers. Ironically enough, when Mosley took the job with the Magic in 2021, Sweeney was one of the coaches that replaced him on the staff. That was also the year Dallas switched over from Rick Carlisle to Jason Kidd, but it opened the door for each coach to take the next step in their career.
Mosley was regarded as the defensive-minded coach for Dallas. He got his players to give a ton of effort on defense, and that's also what Sweeney is best known for.
The offense is exactly where the Magic need to make the leap as they showed during times last season that it can be stagnant. There was a concerted effort to improve the offense last season, which resulted in a jump in offensive rating from 27th in the league to 18th, but it cost them energy on the defensive side of things.
The Magic need to be able to find the right balance of offensive and defensive efforts, and they have brought Sweeney in to figure out how to find that happy medium. The switch from Mosley to Sweeney suggests that the Magic still value defense as their calling card, but perhaps a new voice with a slightly different perspective could be the change Orlando needs to take the next step.
