After finishing the season with a 34-48 record, the Dallas Mavericks came short enough to outright not qualify for the play-in tournament. Given the lack of results the team had achieved after a Western Conference Finals run, there is expected to be plenty of changes.

Among the Mavs' list of priorities is to find a new assistant coach to replace Greg St. Jean after his departure. St. Jean was the the lead assistant on Jason Kidd's staff last season, which naturally came with a lot of responsibilities. As a result, the theme among possible replacements is previous head coaching experience.

According to Marc Stein, among the expected top targets for the Mavs' assistant coach opening include James Borrego and Jeff Hornacek.

"Former head coaches James Borrego (Magic and Hornets) and Jeff Hornacek (Suns and Knicks) are among the expected top targets for the opening Dallas has created on its bench to bolster Jason Kidd's coaching staff," Stein wrote.

Stein reported that while Frank Vogel would be considered a natural candidate due to his relationship with Kidd, he is currently thought to be focused on pursuing a head coaching opportunity. Vogel was among frequent visitors that observed Mavs practices last season.

Another name that is thought of as a potential candidate that could emerge as an option is Terry Stotts, per Stein. Kidd has established familiarity with Stotts dating back to Kidd's playing career with the Mavs when Stotts was an assistant coach in part of Rick Carlisle's staff.

The Mavs have needed to replace a top assistant coach for the third consecutive year given that Jamahl Mosley and Igor Kokoskov had departed for new teams after filing previously filling the role. Mosley took over the head coaching role for the Orlando Magic, while Kokoskov joined the Brooklyn Nets' coaching staff.
