A New Era: Kyrie Irving Shines in Mavs Debut, Delivers Big Win vs. Clippers
LOS ANGELES — Kyrie Irving participated in his first game as a member of the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night, and it resulted in a huge road win, 110-104.
“It’s good. Knowing Kai and just understanding his skill set and the new atmosphere. He’s excited to be here," said coach Jason Kidd. "His leadership down the stretch of getting everyone organized, a lot of great stuff on this new journey with him. It’s going to be fun.”
Irving was traded less than a week ago, along with Markieff Morris from the Brooklyn Nets, in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first-round pick, and multiple second-round picks.
As a result of the win, the Mavs improved their overall record to 30-26, along with 2-7 in games that Luka Doncic doesn't play. In a loaded Western Conference landscape, achieving a road win against a top opponent is valuable regarding the standings.
It was a hot start for the Mavs, fueled by stellar perimeter shooting. Dallas put 41 points on the board in the first quarter as Reggie Bullock led with five makes from beyond the arc. His 15 first-quarter points tied his career-high for points scored in a quarter.
After the opening period, the Mavs could not maintain similar momentum as they were outscored 43-40 combined between the second and third quarters.
Having to go up against a surging Clippers squad with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in the lineup is one of the most difficult things to do in a debut. With LA's defensive versatility, a simplified offense without chemistry can be contained. Despite that, the Mavs had led entering the third quarter, 60-52.
A consistent problem the Mavs faced was an inability to take control of the basketball. The team had 18 turnovers leading to 13 points off turnovers for the Clippers. Irving, adjusting to a new team, committed five turnovers, while rookie Jaden Hardy had five of his own.
Theo Pinson stepped up early in the fourth quarter with some late clock shots, scoring nine points all in the period. The Mavs had outscored the Clippers for much the period and made timely baskets down the stretch after Los Angeles' 9-4 run midway through.
Irving took control of the game in clutch time by drawing a shooting foul on a drive with 1:38 left in regulation, putting Dallas up nine after making both free throws. He later made a hanging finish that displayed his star-power. Those plays proved to be the final stamp of what was a a successful debut for the NBA All-Star starter as he finished with 24 points, three rebounds, and five assists.
The Mavs continue their road with a back-to-back series against the Sacramento Kings, starting on Friday. We'll see if Doncic finally makes his return after a three-game absence to play his first game alongside Irving.
"The most important thing we stressed as a team was just don't force the ball to me,'' said Kyrie following his debut. "You can play off me, I can play off the ball, I can cut. ... When 77 (Doncic) gets back, it'll be even more enjoyable to see."
