NBA Insider Reveals Jason Kidd's Future With Dallas Mavericks After Horrid Season

In this story:
The Dallas Mavericks entered the season with championship expectations. They now sit with the 6th-worst record in the NBA, and are mainly trying to lose games down the stretch. They have been fully eliminated from the postseason for a few games now, which is not what anyone expected.
Could that have Mavericks coach Jason Kidd on the hot seat? He has now missed the postseason in 3 of his 5 seasons leading the Mavs, and that isn't the expectation anyone in this organization should have. NBA insider Marc Stein believes Kidd will remain in place for now.
“League sources say that the Mavericks want Jason Kidd to continue to serve as prized rookie Cooper Flagg's coach and have, to this point, prioritized hiring a general manager who can partner with Kidd as well as provide a cogent vision for how the franchise builds around Flagg in the wake of the disastrous Luka Dončić-to-the-Lakers trade in February 2025," Stein wrote. "External suggestions that Kidd might seek to move into the front office have been repeatedly downplayed by sources with knowledge of the Mavericks' thinking.”
Kidd is well-respected in the building, and he does a great job of managing personalities and egos. He's also a franchise icon after helping guide the team to a championship in 2011 alongside Dirk Nowitzki. That familiarity alone makes it difficult to move on, and that doesn't even include the large contract extension he was given last offseason after some speculation he may look to join the New York Knicks.
However, if the Mavericks fail to make the postseason again next season, that pressure is going to ramp up. It has already started to increase after Mark Cuban revealed Kidd played a role in the Luka Doncic trade last year, which fans still have not gotten over. If the Mavs come out of the gates poorly next year, it may be as uncomfortable in the American Airlines Center as it was early this season.

Jason Kidd Should Not Be Safe
Jason Kidd is a decent coach, but he's not an elite tactical coach. He leaves that to his assistant coaching staff, which has a couple of former head coaches on it.
While the Mavericks think he's the best coach for Cooper Flagg, as they see how Kidd was able to develop Giannis Antetokounmpo, they can't go off that alone. After all, Antetokounmpo didn't win his MVPs and championship until after Kidd was fired. The same may need to occur here.
