The season opener turned sour for the Brooklyn Nets as they lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers, 113-114. Brooklyn got off to a slow start, making them play catch-up for most of the game. The Nets managed to secure a lead in the middle of the fourth quarter but ultimately surrendered it, resulting in a loss.

Starting point guard Ben Simmons had a solid outing, grabbing ten rebounds while adding nine assists to his tally. Simmons only contributed four points, but his performance shows promising potential, and despite the outcome, the Australian guard maintains a measured outlook for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.

“We had too many turnovers. I think it’s just details of the game; small plays ended up being huge for us. Stops, rebounds, and buckets,” Simmons said in a post-game interview. “We’re still figuring each other out and still learning. It’s game 1; I think we take a lot from this game and implement that into what we’ll see in the future.”

Simmons knocked the dust off with this game

Despite his modest four-point contribution, Ben displayed a high level of comfort on the court. Unlike the past two seasons plagued by back issues, he is now in excellent health.

The 6’10'' guard knows he’s still a bit rusty, but he’s getting better, which is a good sign for the Nets as he continues to settle into the starting point guard role once again. Simmons has prioritized grabbing rebounds and initiating swift transitions for the team, reminiscent of his dynamic playstyle during his initial four years with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Simmons knows Mikal will bounce back

The Nets’ star player, Mikal Bridges, had a lackluster performance in the season opener, only heating up and reaching double figures in the fourth quarter. Yet, Ben remains entirely confident in Mikal's abilities and is prepared to offer his support.

“Just keep pushing him. I think they obviously were pretty physical from the start, and that’s what we need to be. It’s a good test for us,” Ben said post-game. “He’s gonna be fine. He’s an incredible player. It’s our first game back.”

The Nets will look to bounce back in another challenging game against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks in their home arena, American Airlines Center, on Friday, October 27.
