Indiana Pacers coaching staff undergoes changes ahead of 2023-24 season

Assistant coach Ronald Nored is leaving the Pacers for the Hawks

The Indiana Pacers coaching staff will look different in the 2023-24 season, head coach Rick Carlisle explained on Saturday.

Assistant coach Ronald Nored, who spent a lot of time focusing on Indiana's defense this past season, is joining the Atlanta Hawks staff under head coach Quin Snyder. He joined Carlisle's group in July of 2021 as the team re-shaped its staff.

The younger Nored was a strong, front-of-the-bench assistant for the Pacers. As a former college player himself, and a younger coach, he connected well with members of the team. His voice was impressive.

Now, he's off to Atlanta and its new staff. "Ron Nored has accepted a position with the Atlanta Hawks. He will be joining them," Carlisle said Saturday while making a few announcements about staff changes.

He was speaking at a Summer League practice, where he is involved helping Pacers young players develop. He was working with second-round pick Mojave King on shooting mechanics after speaking with the media, Summer League head coach Jannero Pargo took his place speaking to reporters afterwards.

Nored's front-of-the-bench post will be taken by assistant coach Jenny Boucek, Carlisle shared. She joined the Pacers at the same time as Nored and came with Carlisle from Dallas to Indiana.

Her role behind the bench will be filled by Jim Boylen. Boylen, who was an assistant with the Pacers in 2011-12, was a consultant for the blue and gold last season and was around the team often. He is now back officially as an assistant coach.

"Jim's a guy that was a head coach in the NBA two years ago and is really excited about being with the Pacers organization," Carlisle said. The head coach thinks it's great that Boylen is willing to sacrifice and be behind the bench with his strong resume.

Prior to re-entering the Pacers organization, Boylen was the head coach of the Chicago Bulls. He spent two seasons guiding the franchise before being fired in August of 2020.

"It's really great that an organization can promote from within," Carlisle said of the Pacers.

These moves come on the heels of Calbert Cheaney leaving the Pacers staff and joining the Indiana Hoosiers. That led to promotions for Isaac Yacob (now a player development coach) and Martin Tombe (now head video coordinator).

Carlisle is still considering what the roles will be for his new assistants and how his new staff will take shape. "I'm talking to staff about it right now. It gives us a chance for maybe a different staff structure where there may not be coordinators as such," he said. "I think it might be time for a change, and I think there may be some real positives for doing that."

Carlisle believes that the Pacers coaching staff for the 2023-24 season is now complete. The roster is undergoing changes during free agency, however, and could still be tweaked in the coming days.
