The news comes months after Kevin Durant asked the Nets to move him over the summer, a demand that was never met and ultimately revoked prior to the start of the season. At the time, the Toronto Raptors were believed to be among the front-runners to land the 34-year-old superstar forward should Brooklyn have decided to move him.
Irving's decision will certainly create a frenzy around Durant who remains under contract for five seasons with the Nets. Durant had so far not shown any renewed interest in a trade this season but that may change if Irving is indeed dealt.
The addition of Irving to the trade market could complicate things for Fred VanVleet should the Raptors make their lead guard available. The Los Angeles Clippers have repeatedly been mentioned as a potential landing spot for VanVleet and they could now pivot toward Irving should the Nets acquiesce to his trade request.
The Nets currently sit fourth in the Eastern Conference at 31-20.
