Former Spurs Owner Red McCombs Dead at 95

Red McCombs was part of the ownership group that helped bring the Spurs to San Antonio.

The San Antonio community is mourning Monday after the passing of businessman and former Spurs owner Red McCombs. He was 95.

The McCombs family released a statement following the news of his passing ...

"The entire McCombs Family is heartbroken to announce that our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Red McCombs, passed away on Sunday February 19, 2023. As he drew his last breath peacefully at home, he was surrounded by family that loved and adored him."

"Red was a visionary entrepreneur who touched many lives and impacted our community in immeasurable ways. But to us he was always, first and foremost, “Dad” or “Poppop."

In 1972, McCombs was part of a group that leased the Dallas Chaparrals in the American Basketball Association. McCombs helped lead the charge to move the Chaparrals down south to San Antonio where the franchise become the Spurs we know today.

The Spurs became a success in San Antonio that McCombs was part of the group that ended up purchasing the franchise. McCombs sold off his stake in the Spurs in the late 1970s, but remained a massive figure in the area.

McCombs went on to become a sports franchise owner in other cities, but returned to San Antonio to the Arena Football League, where he owned the San Antonio Force before they folded following the 1992 season.

McCombs last owned a sports franchise in 2005 with the Minnesota Vikings, but his legacy lives on through his contributions to the University of Texas, which named its business school after him, and his family.
