Why Spurs Trade Talk for Damian Lillard is Silly

Damian Lillard is on the trade block and the San Antonio Spurs are in the mix for possible destinations ... but according to our local columnist Mike Taylor, that talk is silly.

SAN ANTONIO - Sometimes punchlines deliver themselves.

According to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, Portland Trail Blazers megastar Damian Lillard has mucho respect for the San Antonio Spurs and loves Gregg Popovich. Who doesn't? Show me a person who disses the accomplishments of the Spurs and Pop and I'll show you a person in need of psychological help. Just because Dame likes Pop doesn't mean he's coming here or even wants to.

I have much respect for ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, but she has become the latest national pundit to look goofy whilst discussing the Spurs. It's okay Ramona, you aren't the first network talking head to step in it pondering the Spurs and you certainly won't be the last. Nobody knows what San Antonio is gonna do. Ever. They are the KGB of the NBA in terms of information they let out so predicting what they're thinking ahead of time is a fool's game.

That being said, I would be shocked if they traded Lillard as Shelburne predicts as possible. I'd be so stunned I might get Dame shaved into the back of my head and that's not something this 48-year-old man needs to do.

Anyway, why on Earth would the Spurs flip a handful of young prospects they have along with a bunch of high draft picks to bring in Lillard? What would be left of the roster? Dame, Victor Wembanyama and a ragtag bunch of future car salesmen.

Lillard is trying to win a championship right now and with all due respect to Wemby's statement that he wants a ring soon, they ain't ready for all that yet. If Lillard were four years younger and Wembanyama were four years older, it would be a no-brainer to call the Blazers. Lillard should have asked for a trade years ago and I'll bet he regrets not doing so and now that he's finally put his foot down it won't hit the pavement in San Antonio

Enjoy South Beach, Dame.
