NBA.com Says Deandre Ayton Has Most to Prove on Suns Roster

Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton has the most to prove on the roster, according to NBA.com.

As a team, the Phoenix Suns have plenty to prove.

Close doesn't cut it in the NBA, and despite nearly capturing the Larry O'Brien trophy, the trophy cabinet is still empty.

Another year with virtually the same core gives hope the Suns can find their way, but some questions need to be answered first.

Does Chris Paul have enough left in the tank? How much further can Devin Booker propel himself? How much growth are we to expect out of Cameron Johnson?

There's plenty for everybody to prove during the 2022-23 season, but NBA.com says no other player on the roster has more to prove than center Deandre Ayton:

Monty Williams Deandre Ayton

"The former No. 1 overall pick finally got the max extension he wanted, just not in the time or even (initially) from the team he preferred," said Matt Petersen.

"When asked about his reaction to Phoenix matching Indiana’s offer sheet, Ayton offered an extremely casual 'I was happy. It was all done, I guess.' Yet everyone from coach Monty Williams to teammates like Cam Johnson gushed about how involved Ayton was in working out with teammates during the offseason, so it’s hard to peg the big man’s true vibe.

"What isn’t hard to guess is how much more he’ll be allowed to expand his game after showing flashes in the first round against New Orleans. Williams said Ayton’s next step is 'becoming an All-Star.' The 24-year-old has been chomping at the bit to have a role big enough to make that a reality."

Ayton is poised for a big season, and amid the contract, rumors and all other noise, we'll see if the former No. 1 pick can rise above it.
