Is Wendell Carter Jr. a Potential Trade Target for the OKC Thunder?
As the Oklahoma City Thunder step into contention this season, its finding itself in roster-bolstering trade rumors frequently.
One spot that the Thunder could improve is its backup center position, which is lacking when its Rookie of the Year-frontrunner Chet Holmgren isn't on the court. A potential target to fix this problem? Orlando Magic center Wendell Carter Jr.
The seven-year veteran has played a productive career, with averages of 12.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. The issues have come with injuries, as Carter hasn't played over 62 games in his entire career.
Injuries have continued into this season with a hand injury, only playing 10 games so far with averages of 7.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game on 39.7% shooting. It hasn't been the most exciting start to his 2023-24 campaign, but over the last few years he has proven the ability to be a quality center in a backup, and even starting role.
Carter provides solid defensive play both in the paint and perimeter, providing a similar skillset to Jaylin Williams, but on a higher level and further experience. Not only would he be a solid replacement for Holmgren, but he could even fit alongside him in certain lineups.
Because of his struggles to stay on the floor and the Orlando Magic's success without him this season, a trade package wouldn't be anything too large for Oklahoma City to make happen. It would likely require 1-2 players and 2-3 second round picks, a manageable trade for a team with and endless supply of draft picks and young talent. The Magic probably wouldn't be looking for anything special, instead viewing it as more of a way to shed some future salary and gain increased draft capital.
Carter's contract will be locked in until 2026, making it a more interesting proposal. The Thunder doesn't have to worry about him being an expiring contract, and he could very well remain on the roster as an important piece until that time if all goes well.
Oklahoma City has plenty of options to look out for in the trade market, but if Orlando makes Carter expendable by the trade deadline, it may consider looking into adding him to its talented young roster.
