Victor Wembanyama vs Chet Holmgren Headlines NBA Rivals Week

In this story:
The NBA's new addition to the season, Rivals Week, takes place between Jan. 24-28, which pits rival teams against each other in marquee games.
The Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs haven't necessarily been major rivals in the past, but as two young teams with high-potential rookies, the rivalry could begin with the Jan. 24 matchup.
Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren is a matchup that fans are eagerly awaiting, due to the size and skill-level that both big men possess.
Wembanyama is likely the most anticipated prospect since LeBron James in 2003. Standing at 7-foot-4 with the skillset he possesses, his offensive game is nearly unheard of due to his ability to handle the ball and score from a variety of spots.
His defense is sure to be generational, with the combination of shot blocking and versatility he has on that end. Wembanyama can keep up with a variety of players also, due to his speed and 8-foot wingspan.
The frenchman has all of the tools to be a generational type talent, but Holmgren isn't too far behind.
The former 7-foot-1 Gonzaga Bulldog missed his entire rookie season due to injury, but is set to have a great first year in the NBA.
Similar to Wembanyama, Holmgren has many skills that are hard to find in a player of his size. He can also score from anywhere on the court, but has a slightly better jump shot from behind the arc. Holmgren will get the opportunity to have the ball in his hands a lot this season, but also as a pick-and-roll player getting plays from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey.
Defensively, Holmgren is also an incredible shot blocker. It's arguably the strongest attribute of his game, even recording five blocks in a game during Summer League.
The matchup makes a lot of sense when you consider the hype for both prospects, and the exciting core that both teams have.
The Thunder and Spurs could be contending teams for many years to come once their players fully develop, potentially facing each other in the playoffs on several occasions.
Rivals Week itself could be a really exciting addition to the season. Existing rivalries like the Mavericks vs Suns and Celtics vs Heat will have high interest, and matchups such as the Thunder vs Spurs can create brand new rivalries that spark interest between both fanbases.
The Thunder have many exciting games for fans to look forward to this upcoming season, and the rivals game will certainly be one to add to your must-watch list.
