Timberwolves Announce Date For Kevin Garnett's Return to Target Center

This isn't his jersey retirement — that'll happen next season. But it'll still be an exciting moment for KG and Wolves fans.

KG is back. As part of his return to the Timberwolves organization as team ambassador, Kevin Garnett will be in the house at Target Center when the Wolves wrap up the regular season against the New Orleans Pelicans on April 12, the team announced on Friday.

It'll be Garnett's first time attending a game at the arena he once starred in since 2018.

"It's always good to come back to the crib," he said in a video released on social media. "It don't matter when I come back here, it's always like the first time. Yeah, it's gon' be magical. I'm super gassed. Let's get it."

Earlier this season, it was announced that Garnett was returning to the organization in a role encompassing business, community, and content. After years of staying away due to a feud with previous owner Glen Taylor, KG has been embraced by Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez since the club's ownership transition. And now he'll get his first moment of recognition from the fans.

This isn't Garnett's long-overdue jersey retirement — it's been announced that that'll happen at some point next season. Still, this will be a fun way for the Wolves to wrap up the regular season and add some excitement to a game that otherwise may not mean much. KG's return is part of what they're calling "fan appreciation night" and will feature an entire 1990s theme.

"The reunion will evoke KG’s 1990’s era, featuring special in‑game moments and several of his former teammates joining the festivities," the team said in a press release. "Fans will be part of the action all night with exclusive in‑game experiences and giveaways, capped by a halftime performance from hip‑hop legend Montell Jordan, best known for the ultimate 1990’s anthem, 'This Is How We Do It,' all designed to celebrate and thank Wolves fans for their passion and loyalty."

"I can’t wait to come home," Garnett said. "Coming back for me is about what’s next. I’ve spent time with Marc and Alex, and you can feel the difference. The energy is real. The vision is real. They’re building something that lasts, with a team on the court that’s hungry to win. I’m excited to be back in the building with the fans. Minnesota, let’s go!"

"Kevin Garnett has always represented the heart and intensity of this franchise," said Lore and Rodriguez in a statement. "The energy he generates is unmistakable, and welcoming him home to Target Center is a moment our fans have been eagerly anticipating."

Garnett, who turns 50 in May, is the best player in Timberwolves history and the franchise leader in dozens of statistical categories. The fifth overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft, KG spent 14 seasons with the Wolves from 1995-2007 and then 2014-16. He also played for the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets in his Hall of Fame career.
