NFL's Top 10 Shakiest QB Situations

Bears

Rex Grossman was either really good or really bad last season. Unfortunately for the Bears, he was really bad at the wrong time in their Super Bowl loss to the Colts. Chicago may not be able to live with Grossman's turnovers throughout the season and could turn to veteran Brian Griese.

Falcons

While Vick is loaded with talent, rumors about his off-field activities have to be a major concern for the Falcons. If dog-fighting allegations prove to have merit, the Falcons QB could face an NFL suspension, and Atlanta doesn't have much room for error in the competitive NFC South. And there is the matter of how long it will take Vick to get comfortable with new coach Bobby Petrino's offense. The Falcons signed Joey Harrington to back up Vick.

Texans

The Texans have a lot of faith in Matt Schaub, whom they acquired from the Falcons this offseason. But Schaub has started just two games in his three-year career. Historically, unproven free-agent quarterbacks have had mixed success in the NFL. Houston had better hope Schaub isn't the next A.J. Feeley, because it doesn't have many other options.

Raiders

For the second season in a row, the Raiders will have a new starter under center. It'll either be rookie JaMarcus Russell, the No. 1 overall pick, or Josh McCown, whom Oakland got in exchange for a fourth-round. Given the status of Oakland's offensive line, this will be a precarious situation for whoever ends up starting.

Jaguars

Byron Leftwich enters the final season of his contract and is coming off ankle surgery. His competition, David Garrard, took a step back last year, especially down the stretch when Jacksonville's season fell apart. The Jags didn't draft a quarterback, so they're willing to give either Leftwich or Garrard the chance to be the franchise quarterback.

Buccaneers

Newly acquired Jeff Garcia was excellent late in the season for Philadelphia, but that doesn't mean he'll win the preseason battle for the Bucs starting job. He'll be going up against Chris Simms, who looked like a future Pro Bowler in 2005, but is attempting to come back from a ruptured spleen. The Bucs also traded for Jake Plummer, but the former Bronco insists he is retired and won't play for Tampa Bay.

Chiefs

Damon Huard performed well last season, tossing 11 touchdowns and just one interception while completing 60.7 percent of his passes in 10 games. But he is a life-long backup, so the Chiefs may hope that second-year pro Brodie Croyle wins the battle. Neither QB has proven he can start a full season.

Browns

Charlie Frye appears to be the slight favorite to start Week 1, although he may just be warming the seat for Brady Quinn, who may get on the field midway through the season. Second-year pro Derek Anderson is also in the mix.

Dolphins

As of mid-May, the Dolphins hadn't completed a deal for veteran Trent Green. If nothing develops, they'll have to see if Daunte Culpepper will be close to full strength as the season approaches. They also have Cleo Lemon, but he only played in four games last year. Second-round pick John Beck is 26, so he could prove to be advanced for a rookie and earn a shot early in the season.

Vikings

Experts were surprised the Vikings didn't sign a free agent quarterback or take one in the draft, because now they'll head into the season with Tarvaris Jackson as the starter and Brooks Bollinger backing him up. Jackson showed some signs of promise as a rookie, but his numbers weren't great (two touchdowns, four interceptions in four games). There's no telling how he'll respond to the pressure of being a full-time starter.
