An abbreviated look at what’s going on around the NFL on Friday, Sept. 2:

• Has Davone Bess supplanted Brian Hartline as the Dolphins' No. 2 wide receiver? It looks like a real possibility after Bess rested with the starters Thursday while Hartline suited up against Houston.

• Rich Bartel may have claimed victory Thursday in the battle to back upKevin Kolb in Arizona, connecting on 12 of 16 passes for 216 yards and two TDs. The other QB in the mix, John Skelton, had to sit out with an injury

Ray Rice and Ricky Williams will form Baltimore's running back tandem, but the Ravens still face a decision on who will be the third RB: Jalen Parmalee or Anthony Allen.

• The Vikings may not have known just how agile Christian Ponder is when they drafted him in April, but they found out Thursday night.

• Rookie offensive lineman Danny Watkins asked to play in Philadelphia's preseason finale Thursday. The Eagles' projected starting right guard got his wish but struggled mightily against the Jets.

• Raymond Radway had the inside track on the Cowboys' fifth receiver spot, until he broke his leg during Thursday's game. That injury opened the door for either Jesse Holley or Manny Johnson to make the roster.

• Brandon Banks has been trying to prove his worth as a return man to the Redskins' coaching staff. His 95-yard punt return Thursday night might have locked up a roster spot for him.

• Here's a scary thought for the Colts: The QB predicament caused by Peyton Manning's neck injury might not be the biggest of their worries. What is? An offensive line that's struggling to protect anyone right now.
