Seattle Seahawks Epic Moments
Dec. 23, 1989
Not even a decisive 29-0 season-ending loss to the Washington Redskins could ruin the day's crown event: Steve Largent's final football game. The future Hall of Famer and NFL's all-time leader in receptions (819), touchdown receptions (100) and reception yards (13,089) when he retired was the initial inductee into the old Kingdome's Ring of Honor before kickoff, and ended his 14-year professional career -- all with the Seahawks -- following the game.

Hosting the Cowboys at Qwest Field for a Wild Card playoff game, Seattle watched as Dallas looked to secure the lead on a 19-yard chip shot kick with just over a minute remaining. Down just a point at 21-20, quarterback Tony Romo, also acting as the field goal holder, famously flubbed the snap and the Cowboys never got the kick off. Seattle escaped with the victory.

In the Divisional Playoff round, the visiting Seahawks were heavy underdogs against the Dan Marino-led Dolphins, who had been to the Super Bowl just the season before. Three second-half turnovers, including a Marino interception, provided Seattle with 13 points and it held on for a 27-20 win, and a trip to its first conference championship game.

At 7-9, the Seahawks were the NFL's first-ever division winner and playoff team with a sub-.500 record, and they were hosting the defending Super Bowl champion Saints. On second-and-10, Marshawn Lynch flipped the switch to "Beast Mode" and took a handoff, spectacularly storming 67 yards down the field late in the fourth quarter. He would break seven tackles on his way to the end zone, and Seattle's esteemed 12th Man created seismic activity of about a 1 or 2 magnitude earthquake on the Richter Scale during the run, and the Seahawks went on to the unexpected 41-36 win.

In only the second conference title game in the franchise's history, the Seahawks faced the visiting Panthers, who had represented the NFC and nearly won the Super Bowl two seasons before. Matt Hasselbeck and Shaun Alexander guided Seattle to a resounding 34-14 win over Carolina and the Seahawks went on to make their only Super Bowl appearance to date.
