Bengals hire Marvin Lewis' son Marcus to coaching staff

The Bengals kept an open position on Marvin Lewis' coaching staff in the family on Monday, hiring Lewis' son Marcus to join him on the sidelines in Cincinnati as an assistant.

The 24-year-old Lewis, who played linebacker at Indiana State from 2008-2011, will debut this season as the team's new defensive quality control assistant. According to the team's official announcement, Marcus Lewis' hiring marks the first time father and son have worked together on a Bengals coaching staff.

Marvin and Marcus Lewis will join a handful of other father-son combinations on NFL coaching staffs. Elsewhere around the league, Bill Belichick's son Steve is an assistant coach within the Patriots organization, while the son of Pete Carroll, Nate, is an assistant with the Seahawks organization. In addition, the sons of Andy Reid, Lovie Smith and former Bengals coordinator (now Minnesota Vikings head coach) Mike Zimmer all work as assistants with their fathers.

The younger Lewis spent last year as an assistant with the University of Cincinnati coaching staff. His duties included working with the defensive line and scout teams as well as film breakdown, self-scouting and practice organization.

He is expected to provide a similar role with the Bengals moving forward.

Marcus Lewis certainly comes from good stock, given his father has amassed a very solid 90-85-1 career regular season record in 11 seasons with the Bengals.
