Last season, the Washington Redskins finished 3-13, last in the NFC East. Quarterback Robert Griffin III struggled in his return from injury, and did not play the final three games of the season. Washington lost longtime linebacker London Fletcher to retirement after the season.

The offseason brought new additions to the receiving corps in DeSean Jackson and Andre Roberts. The Redskins signed defensive Jason Hatcher away from the division rival Dallas Cowboys and drafted Stanford pass rusher Trent Murphy. Former Cinicinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden replaced Mike Shanahan as the team's head coach.
