The Rams host the Vikings in Week 1 to kick off the NFL season. Both teams missed the playoffs in 2013. Minnesota went 5-10-1 and finished last in the NFC North, while St. Louis went 7-9 and finished last in the NFC West.

Minnesota has made the playoffs in three of the last six seasons.

Last season was the first time the Vikings had a tie since 1978.

Defensive tackle Linval Joseph was shot as an innocent bystander in an incident in early August. He's expected to play against the Rams.

Matt Cassel was named the team's starting quarterback, beating out first-round pick Teddy Bridgewater.

Cassel started six games for the Vikings last year and played in nine, throwing for 1,807 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

The seven games the Rams won in both 2012 and 2013 are the most the team has won in a season since winning eight in 2006.

The Rams selected defensive end Michael Sam, the first openly gay prospect in NFL history, in the seventh round of this year's draft. The team released him in the final round of roster cuts last week.

St. Louis starting quarterback Sam Bradford tore his ACL in the team's third preseason game, putting him out for the 2014 season. He sustained the same injury in Week 7 in 2013.

Shaun Hill will start at quarterback in Bradford's absence. Hill has started 26 games in his career, last starting a game in 2010 for the Detroit Lions.

The Rams were 15th in the NFL in total defense in 2013, allowing 345 yards per game, and 28th in total offense, averaging 304.8 yards per game.

Defensive end Robert Quinn was second in the NFL with 19 sacks last season.

The team lost running back Isaiah Pead for the season in August with a torn ACL.

Head coach Jeff Fisher is entering his third season with the Rams. He's 14-17-1 in his first two seasons.

The Rams had two first-round picks in this year's draft. They selected Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson No. 2 and Missouri defensive tackle Aaron Donald No. 13.
