AP names Kareem Copeland as Utah sports writer

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Kareem Copeland, who covered Florida State's run to the national title last season and the continuing legal troubles of Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, has been named sports writer for The Associated Press in Utah.

An AP newsman based in Tallahassee, Florida, Copeland has been a lead reporter on Winston's ongoing legal issues and the corresponding fallout for Florida State. Copeland has also covered Florida State basketball and handled other Florida news, including coverage of the 2014 legislative session. His experience includes covering the Green Bay Packers, the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Pacers, and college athletics at Notre Dame, Indiana and Purdue.

Copeland joined the AP in 2013. He earned a degree in sports management and communications from the University of Michigan.

The appointment was announced by Eduardo Montes, the AP's assistant sports editor for the western U.S. Copeland will be based in Salt Lake City. His coverage responsibilities will include the Utah Jazz and college athletics at the University of Utah, BYU and Utah State and Olympic sports.

Copeland succeeds the late Lynn DeBruin.
