The New England Patriots acquired linebacker Akeem Ayers from the Tennessee Titans, the Patriots announced Wednesday.

Jim Wyatt of The Tennesseanreported on Tuesday night that the deal was pending Ayers passing a physical. Ayers, who had surgery on both of his knees this offseason, has only played in two of the Titans' seven games this season.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Titans will send Ayers and a seventh-round draft pick to the Patriots in exchange for a sixth-rounder.

Ayers started all 16 games the previous three seasons and has recorded 154 tackles and nine sacks since being selected in the second round of the 2011 draft.

The Patriots lost starting linebacker Jerod Mayo for the season with a torn patellar tendon. Defensive end Chandler Jones is expected to miss a monthwith an injured hip.

New England's defense is No. 12 in the league in both points and yards allowed. The Patriots are No. 10 in the NFL with 18.0 sacks on the season.

The Patriots host the Chicago Bears on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
