The Lions lost 34-6, and the Patriots could've left Gillette Stadium with a 24-7 win. But after the two-minute warning, the Patriots were lining up for a field goal when a penalty was called on Lions defensive tackle C.J. Mosley for running into Patriots long snapper Danny Aiken, giving the Patriots a first down. On the next play from the Lions' 1-yard line, Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount rushed into the end zone for a 34-7 New England lead.
On the subsequent drive, Raiola went for the cut block on Patriots defensive tackle Zach Moore.
Raiola was not penalized on the play. After the game, he admitted to the cut block, according to the Detroit Free Press:
"I cut him," Raiola said. "We took a knee, so I cut the nose (tackle). They went for six (a touchdown). They went for a touchdown at 2 minutes. They could have took three knees and the game could have been over. It's football. He wants to keep playing football, let's play football. Not a big deal. It's football."
The Lions had zero timeouts remaining when the Patriots elected to go for the touchdown.
Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said after the game that he didn't see Raiola's cut block, but still called it "dirty."
"I just heard what happened, but that was stupid," Wilfork said. "I didn't see it, but from what I heard … You're taking a knee. They'd get mad if we were just to blow up one of their players, so I mean, it's just uncalled for. But at the same time, you always have to protect yourself, so you always have to play with your neck on a swivel and being alert for 60 minutes, and it came down to it today on a bonehead play like that. But luckily no one got hurt and we can move on."
