Jets place Allen on IR, activate Vickerson from active-PUP
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) The New York Jets placed safety Antonio Allen on the season-ending injured reserve list Monday and activated defensive lineman Kevin Vickerson from the active/physically unable to perform list.
Allen tore an Achilles tendon during practice last Thursday. He was placed on the waived/injured list, cleared waivers over the weekend and placed on the Jets' IR list. Allen, a seventh-round draft pick from South Carolina in 2012, was injured on a non-contact play in team drills when he came out of his stance and then fell to the ground.
Vickerson, signed in the offseason after one season, had been sidelined since the start of camp with a hamstring injury. He participated in practice Monday.
Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson participated in position drills for the first time since tweaking a hamstring on Aug. 2. He didn't participate in any team drills, and coach Todd Bowles was uncertain when Wilkerson would fully return. There's a chance Wilkerson will sit out the Jets' preseason opener at Detroit on Thursday night if he doesn't fully participate in practice Tuesday.
Wide receiver Eric Decker and cornerback Antonio Cromartie also didn't participate in team drills, but Bowles said he was just giving them a rest day.
Tight end Steve Maneri (hamstring) and wide receivers T.J. Graham (hamstring) and Chris Owusu (concussion) sat out. Wide receiver Shaq Evans (bruised ribs) returned after a few days out.
NOTES: Geno Smith threw his first two interceptions of camp, the first picked off by Marcus Williams and the second by Darrelle Revis. ''The DBs made good plays,'' Bowles said. ''They get paid money, too. Hopefully, they'll make some more. I was starting to think they couldn't catch.'' ... Bowles was unhappy with what he thought was a sluggish day of practice, making the entire team run three gassers across the field late in practice. ''You can't practice average if you want to be great,'' he said.
