Bills head coach Rex Ryan says he knew he was done as coach of the Jets before last season began.

In an interview on HBO's Real Sports, Ryan candidly discussed his situation in New York. The Jets fired him after the team went 8–8.

“I knew we weren't going to have a good team when we never did anything in free agency. I knew that,” Ryan said.

“I was done,” he added after being prompted. “100%, I knew I was done. 100%.“

In the clip below, Ryan discusses his relationship with Jets owner Woody Johnson, who he says wanted to keep him around, and the conditions that led to the inevitability of his firing. “It wasn't going to work,” he said.

Ryan's full interview airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
