Panthers starting DE Frank Alexander (torn Achilles) out for season
Carolina Panthers defensive end Frank Alexander tore his Achilles tendon in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins and will miss the rest of the season, head coach Ron Rivera announced after the game.
The Panthers listed Alexander as the starter at right defensive end going into the game.
Alexander, 25, was a fourth-round pick in 2012 and recorded 2.5 sacks in 16 games a rookie. He had nine solo tackles and one sack in his second season but was suspended for 14 games last season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Alexander is in the final year of his rookie contract and Rivera has said this is a “make or break” season for him, according to the Associated Press.
Kony Ealy, a second-round pick who recorded four sacks as a rookie last year, is listed as Alexander’s backup.
