Giants’ Bennett Jackson, Justin Currie injured in preseason game

The New York Giants continue to be plagued by injuries at the safety position. Safeties Justin Currie and Bennett Jackson were injured in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Currie suffered a fractured ankle the team announced, and Jackson appeared to injure his knee. Early indications were that Jackson tore his ACL, Newsday’s Tom Rock reported. ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that the injury “could be very serious.” Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily Newsquoted a source as saying the injury “doesn’t look good.”

Currie, an undrafted free agent from Western Michigan, was injured while covering a kickoff in the first half, while Jackson was injured late in the fourth quarter.

The Giants have already lost one safety—rookie fifth-round pick Mykkele Thompson—for the season. Rookie second-round pick Landon Collins sprained his MCL in the preseason opener but returned to practice this week.

Safety Cooper Taylor missed some practice time this past week with a toe injury and was inactive for the game. Nat Berhe, a second-year safety, tore a calf muscle earlier this month but told reporters after the game that he expects to return to practice this coming week.

The Giants signed veteran safety Brandon Meriweather last week to help add depth at the position.
