Amerson, a second round selection in the 2013 draft out of N.C. State, is the highest drafted player from his class to be cut.
“It's not what [Amerson] didn't do, it's just that the other guys are playing better,” Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said on Monday. “He has all the measurables you want, but for whatever reason, they don't show on a consistent basis when he's out there.”
The 23-year-old Amerson started 15 games last season. In 33 career NFL games, Amerson has totaled 111 combined tackles.
Kearse, a fifth-year player out of Alabama A&M, has 39 tackles and 4.5 sacks in his NFL career.
The Redskins (1–1) will play the New York Giants (0–2) on Thursday night in New Jersey.
