Michael Sam is preparing to return to the NFL next season, he told reporters Thursday.

Sam is back at the University of Missouri working on his masters while training at the Tigers’ facilities. The former SEC defensive player of the year came out as gay in February 2014, and after preseason stints with the Rams and Cowboys and with the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL, Sam announced in August he would take a break from football.

Sam was confident he could make a roster next season, according to ABC 17 News. He says he plans to work his way into a broadcasting career, as well.

“It’s been a roller coaster,” Sam told reporters. “I’ve been trying to figure out what’s next in my life. I’ve just come to a conclusion, as I take this break from football, I want to focus on my media training.”
