After scoring to go ahead 7–0 on a 13-play, 84-yard drive to open their game against the Washington Redskins, the New England Patriots got the football right back for a second possession.

As Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski ran up to the football on the ensuing kickoff and gave Washington the impression that he would send it deep, he directed the football to the right. After one Redskins player was unable to secure the ball, Jonathan Freeny made the recovery for New England.

The Patriots turned the ball over moments later on a Julian Edelman fumble.
