Revis to sit out Jets game vs. Dolphins with concussion

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) Revis Island is closed for the weekend.

Cornerback Darrelle Revis will not play in the New York Jets' game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday because he is still dealing with a concussion. He remains in the NFL's concussion protocol and must be cleared by doctors before he can practice with the team.

''He's doing a little better each day,'' coach Todd Bowles said Friday, ''but not well enough for physical activity.''

Revis was injured during the Jets' 24-17 loss at Houston last Sunday and has not practiced since. Bowles said the star cornerback comes to the facility for treatment in the morning and then is sent home.

Marcus Williams will likely start in Revis' place opposite Antonio Cromartie in the secondary.

''Any time you lose a guy like that, you lose a one-on-one master matchup guy,'' Bowles said. ''But we have other guys who can play and have played and will have to step in.''

Williams is in his second season with the Jets after signing with New York last year following a stint with Houston. He has played in nine games this season, including one start each at strong safety in place of an injured Calvin Pryor, and at cornerback in place of an injured Cromartie.

''I wouldn't call it `strange,' I would call it `fun,''' Williams said of playing throughout the secondary this season. ''Just to go out there and play different positions, it's probably been tough on other teams because you probably never know where I'm going to be.''

He leads the Jets with four interceptions to go along with 17 total tackles, 1 1/2 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

''I like his poise,'' Bowles said. ''He's very patient out there. The moment is not too big for him. The ball finds him, No. 1. Very instinctive, very smart player.''

Williams is stepping into big shoes, though, with Revis not playing. Ryan Tannehill and the Dolphins' offense could look to test Williams early. Bowles said the Jets would not change their scheme despite not having Revis in the lineup.

''I don't feel any pressure,'' Williams said. ''It's just going out there and playing football.''

Bowles acknowledged he knew nothing about Williams before he took over as Jets coach. Williams was an undrafted free agent last year out of North Dakota State, where he set the school record with 21 career interceptions. With solid performances every day in practice and on game days, he has quickly earned the trust of Bowles and his coaching staff.

''He's been consistent from Day 1,'' Bowles said. ''When you put him in, he just makes plays.''

Center Nick Mangold was a full participant for the second straight day and will play Sunday after suffering a deep cut to his right hand against the Texans that required six or seven stitches.

Defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson (hamstring) will also play after sitting out last weekend.

Safety Dion Bailey is listed as doubtful and could miss his third straight game with a high ankle sprain.
