Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart has a sprained foot and will likely miss Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, head coach Ron Rivera told reporters Wednesday.

Stewart left Carolina’s Week 14 win over the Atlanta Falcons with the injury and did not return. After the game, Rivera suggested the injury was not severe and that Stewart may have returned to the game if his team had not been ahead by such a large margin. The Panthers defeated the Falcons 38–0.

Stewart, an eight-year NFL veteran, has 242 carries for 989 yards and six touchdowns this season.

With a Week 15 win over the Giants and a loss by the Arizona Cardinals, the Panthers can secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
