The San Diego Chargers have placed rookie running back Melvin Gordon on injured reserve with a knee injury, head coach Mike McCoy announced on Monday.

“He has some cartilage damage in his knee that will require surgery,” McCoy said in his press conference. “And they’re going to run some further tests on it to see exactly what they need to do with everything moving forward.”

Gordon, who was selected by the Chargers in the first round of the 2015 draft, left Sunday’s game against the Dolphins with a knee injury and did not return.

His season will end after 14 games, in which he carried the ball 184 times for 641 yards and no touchdowns.

In his place Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will see increased work.
