Redskins win NFC East as Cousins leads them past Eagles
The Washington Redskins beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38–24 to win the NFC East on Saturday night and clinch a playoff spot.
Kirk Cousins threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns to pace the Redskins, moving past a bizarre kneel-down and bungled scoring opportunity on first-and-goal to end the first half. Tight end Jordan Reed caught nine passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns to lead the receiving corps.
Although they ran for two touchdowns, the Eagles managed just 45 yards on the ground and fumbled seven times as a team, losing two of them. One was recovered by Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall for a third-quarter touchdown that put Washington up 30–17. Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford threw for 380 yards and a touchdown.
Washington moves to 8–7 and will play in the postseason for the first time since 2012, when it last won the division. The team has not won a playoff game since 2006. The Redskins opened the season 2–4 and has gone 6–3 since. The Redskins next face the Cowboys in a rivalry game rendered somewhat meaningless by the standings.
The Eagles fell to 6–9 and face the Giants, also eliminated by today’s result, in Week 17 to end the season.
