Woman convicted in ex-quarterback fraud scheme rebuilds life

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) A woman accused of stealing nearly $500,000 from several friends as part of a fraud perpetrated by an ex-Ohio State and NFL quarterback says she's trying to rebuild her life.

Anita Barney pleaded guilty to theft charges in 2012, was sentenced to three years of community control and ordered to repay her 19 victims.

Barney's troubles started when she lost most of her money to football great Art Schlichter (SHLEES'-tuhr), who played professionally for the Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills.

Authorities say Barney loaned money to Schlichter, then recruited friends to participate in the scheme.

Schlichter is serving a nearly 11-year prison sentence.

The 74-year-old Barney has written a book and is making public appearances to tell her side of the story, including the ''Dr. Phil'' show.
