Following a fumble recovery for a touchdown by defensive end Malik Jackson, the Carolina Panthers faced a 10–0 deficit against the Denver Broncos in the first quarter of Super Bowl 50. The score was prompted by a Von Miller strip of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

According to a report by ESPN’s Patrick Stiegman, only three teams have won the Super Bowl after facing a 10-point deficit. The teams who mounted the historic comebacks were the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII, New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV and New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.

After Jackson’s touchdown, the Panthers responded with a score of their own thanks to a run by running back Jonathan Stewart to cut the lead to 10–7. The touchdown came after Newton led Carolina down the field with three passes of at least 12 yards.

The Broncos added a field goal in the second quarter.
