The Chargers will focus their efforts of building a new stadium in downtown San Diego, the team announced Tuesday.

The Chargers were given one year in January to decide whether to remain in San Diego or join the Rams in a joint stadium in Los Angeles. The team has already committed to playing in San Diego for at least one more season.

While the city’s stadium proposals center on the Mission Valley area east of downtown, the Chargers believe building their stadium in downtown San Diego in a complex including the Padres’ baseball stadium would create a thriving “entertainment and sports district.”

Economists say Rams, Chargers leaving could be good decision

The Chargers have been in a years-long battle with San Diego for a new stadium. The team hopes to earn voter approval of the downtown project in November to remain in the city.
