NEW YORK (AP) A person with direct knowledge of the situation says the New York Jets have restructured the contract of left guard James Carpenter, creating some much-needed salary cap space.

Carpenter agreed to convert $3.69 million of his $4.45 million salary for this season into a signing bonus Wednesday, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team does not announce financial terms of contracts.

By lowering Carpenter's base salary to $760,000, the Jets save $2.46 million in salary cap room. It's the first in what could be a few moves to restructure deals because New York has only about $3.4 million in cap space.

The Jets still haven't announced their two-year, $7 million contract for defensive end Jarvis Jenkins, and they are still trying to re-sign quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
