The Browns have released safety Donte Whitner, the team announced on Saturday.

Whitner, 30, was entering the third year of a four-year, $28 million contract he signed before the 2014 season. He was owed $8.45 million in 2016–17.

“These are difficult decisions so make but we felt it was the best decision for the Browns at the time,” team vice president Sashi Brown said in a statement. “We wish him the best as he continues his career.”

Whitner recorded 58 tackles and forced one fumble in 14 games for the Browns last year. A first-round pick of the Bills in 2006, the Ohio State product spent the first five seasons of his career in Buffalo before a three-year stint with the 49ers.
