PHILADELPHIA (AP) Carson Wentz spent his first practice with the Philadelphia Eagles throwing indoors because of rain.

The No. 2 overall pick took snaps and fired passes on the first day of rookie camp Friday. He'll be the main man under center until starter Sam Bradford and backup Chase Daniel arrive Tuesday for the start of organized team activities.

''Hopefully, I can lead these guys and show what I can do a little bit,'' Wentz said. ''Nothing is handed to you here. You have to come in and earn the respect of everybody. I'm looking forward to doing that.''

Wentz showed he's poised and polished before he even took the field. He deftly answered questions at a news conference and downplayed controversy surrounding Bradford. After the Eagles traded up twice to get in position to select Wentz in last month's NFL draft, Bradford demanded a trade and skipped voluntary workouts. The Eagles ignored his request and Bradford showed up this week.

''Personally, I don't think there will be a lot of tension,'' Wentz said. ''People might make it out to be. But I think the coaches and everyone will be on the same page. And I think it will be a good working relationship.''

Wentz led North Dakota State to its fifth consecutive FCS title last season. He passed for 1,651 yards and 17 touchdowns during his senior year that was shortened by a wrist injury. Wentz only started his final two seasons and didn't face big-time competition. He's not expected to step in right away and play.

If things go right for the Eagles, Wentz will be in street clothes on game days. Bradford and Daniel are making a lot of money to be the top two QBs. Wentz has plenty to learn in coach Doug Pederson's offense.

''I think it's a great quarterback-friendly offense,'' Wentz said. ''I love the intricacies of it. I've just really scratched the surface with it.''
