The Arizona Cardinals and safety Tyrann Mathieu are in talks on a long-term contract extension, reports the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The contract could make Mathieu the highest-paid safety in the league, Rapoport reports.

The Cardinals selected Mathieu in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft, and he has started 31 of 40 games for Arizona since. He sustained a season-ending ACL injury at the end of last season after the first All-Pro season of his career, during which he recorded a career-high 80 tackles with five interceptions.

Patriots safety Devin McCourty currently has the highest guaranteed contract at $22 million.
