The San Diego Chargers have claimed quarterback Zach Mettenberger off waivers, reports NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.

Mettenberger was waived by the Titans earlier this week. The quarterback has a connection with the Chargers coaching staff, playing for offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt when the two were both in Tennessee the last two seasons.

Whisenhunt was the Titans’ head coach when Mettenberger was drafted in the sixth round of the 2014 draft. Mettenberger played in 14 games over two seasons with the Titans, completing 60.3% of his passes with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for a 75.4 passer rating.

If Mettenberger is able to make the Chargers’ roster, he will be in a backup role to incumbent starter Philip Rivers.
